History – Intent, Implementation and Impact

Intent

At Stanhope Primary School, it is our intent that all pupils, regardless of background and ability, have access to a broad and balanced History curriculum. Through the delivery of learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed, it is our intent that:

• The History curriculum provides a coherent understanding of the world around the children, knowing where they are from,
• They take inspiration from historical figures and events from the past and present,
• Children will recognise major movements and moments (chronologically) in the past which have shaped this lives.
• Children ask questions and form their own opinions which are supported by facts and experiences.

Implementation

All pupils at Stanhope Primary School have access to high-quality History teaching. The teaching of History at Stanhope Primary School is implemented in the following ways; all pupils:

• Understand where they are from and the history of their local area and Great Britain.
• Have a chronological understanding of main events, movements and individuals from the past and understand how these shaped the future.
• Use and define historical terminology and language used such as ‘civilisation’ and ‘empire’.
• Develop an understanding of historical themes such as change through time.
• Develop historical enquiry skills through the study of artefacts and other sources. Children will have the experiences of seeing the past come alive.
• Will ask questions and form opinions based on facts which are supported by evidence.

KS1

• Children will use new language referring to the past
• Compare time periods and explain why they differ (within and outside of living memory)
• Begin to question and understand how we learn about the past
• Use artefacts to learn about the past
• Know about the past of our local area on a regional basis 

KS2

• Children have a sound understanding of events (chronologically) that have shaped the past.
• Understand the past of our local area and its significance on a national and international level.
• Use different sources and artefacts to learn about the past and to begin to question why opinions on the past may be different because of the study of artefacts.
• Make comparisons of the time periods they study and to begin to question and explain why time periods differ.

We meet National Curriculum expectations for History through a progressively coherent scheme of study.

Pupils have a clear understanding of where they come from and the history of their locality.

The curriculum is enriched by visits to local significant places such as Arbeia Fort and Beamish helping the past come to life.

Impact

At Stanhope Primary School, our aim is to create effective learners who are stewards of their own development and can achieve their personal best in everything they do. We determine and monitor the progress of History in our school in the following ways:

• Monitoring the teaching and learning through book and planning scrutinies, and lesson observation and drop ins.
• Schemes of learning are monitored throughout the year and are used to revisit and recap on prior learning
• Conversations with staff and pupils are carried out in order to monitor teaching and learning
• Knowledge organisers are used as a way of embedding information and as a way of displaying key vocabulary
• Formative assessment is recorded to measure the impact of our History curriculum.
